Tai Tzu Ying has an impressive track record with 5 titles in the 6 tournaments she has played in 2018 so far. She was unbeaten for 27 matches before going on court against He Bingjiao from China today.

But it looked very much as if this streak could be broken when the Chinese won first game 21-18. In second game however, it was one-way traffic from Tai who set things straight via 8-0 and 14-1 before she pushed the match into a third game with a crushing 21-7.

In the decisive game He Bingjiao took control again and had a comfortable 5 point lead most of the way. It was a favorite for the World Championship title who was under big pressure as the Chinese was suddenly up 18-12. Only three more points to the Chinese, then it would be over and out for Tai Tzu Ying. And after 55 minutes the huge surprise was a fact; He Bingjiao had broken Tai Tzu Ying’s amazing streak and sent out the top seeded player from Chinese Taipei with 21-13. The world’s best women’s single player is still left without World Championship medals in her collection.

European seeking revenge

Carolina Marín and Saina Nehwal had played 9 matches against each other before today’s match and it was the Indian who had a small lead of 5-4. However, the beginning of first game didn’t show that the two players were so equal since it only took 6 minutes for Marín to bring herself to 11-2 at interval. But it was also a Spanish girl who was seeking revenge after her defeat to Nehwal in first round of Denmark Open last year. Marín looked very unstoppable in first game.

In only 12 minutes first game was over; 21-6 to Marín, and Nehwal looked extremely shaky. This was not the result people had been expecting and surely the Indian shuttler was eager to show something else now. And in second game it started looking better for Nehwal, though still with the Spanish Olympic Champion controlling the match. At interval 11-8 for Marín there was still hope for the Indian. And then again, no. Marín speeded up and gave only three more points to Nehwal as she took the game with 21-11. A very big defeat for Saina Nehwal who certainly just wants to forget this match as soon as possible. On the other side Carolina Marín looks like the new favorite to claim the title again.
