5. Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, China

Number 2 on the BWF World Ranking qualified to the season finals as number 5 on the HSBC Race to Guangzhou Ranking. They are China’s second best mixed double pair, Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping. They have had a very good 2018 where they reached six finals in just 14 tournaments. Sadly for Wang and Huang there is one other mixed double pair, which has been outstanding and almost unbeatable this year;their compatriots Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong. The two pairs played four finals against each other in 2018 – Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping lost all of them. In the six finals they played they just got the gold medals in one; the Asian Championships.

6. Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, Indonesia

If any Indonesian mixed double pairs should qualify for the season finals in Guangzhou, most would probably have expected that to be Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir. But the legendary duo only finished 11 on the HSBC Race to Guangzhou Ranking and as the third best Indonesian pair. Hafiz Faizal and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja have had a great 2018 and they are the ones to defend Indonesia’s colors in Guangzhou. The duo is ranked 12 on the BWF World Ranking and suffered six first round exits during the season. Three quarterfinals, two semifinals and one title have together with general consistency proven enough to bring Faizal and Widjaja to Guangzhou.
