India: 2 medals
Last time India won a medal at the Asian Games was in 1982 when the Games were held on Indian soil in Delhi. That is at the same time the most successful Asian Games of the country as they took 5 medals. India had 8 medals in total before arriving to Jakarta few weeks ago, all of them being bronze. But this was changed when one of their players reached the final.
With two defeats of 1-3 in the quarterfinal for both Indian teams, there were no medals for India at the team event. The Indian women lost to Japan and the men lost to Indonesia.
In the individual competition it went much better and we feel like saying that it was of course in women’s single India got their medals. Saina Nehwal, who already has several gold, silver and bronze medals from the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, the Asian Championships and the Olympic Games, added her first Asian Games medal to her collection. The Indian lost the semifinal in Jakarta and brings back a bronze medal this time.
Pusarla V. Sindhu has been in several big championship finals but lost them all. The tall Indian has silver from the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games – and now also from the Asian Games as the lost the final to Tai Tzu Ying. Though it is of course always sad to lose a final, it is still the best Asian Games result for Indian badminton.
