One of Malaysia’s best mixed double pairs are part of the most interesting first round matches at China Open, which has seen two late withdrawals in the mixed category.

World Champions, world number 1 and winners of Japan Open yesterday, Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, are top seeded on home soil this week at China Open. Two days ago they defeated Malaysia’s runners-up from the 2016 Rio Olympics in three games of the Japan Open semifinal. This week the two pairs have drawn each other in first round.

Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying will therefore be very hungry for revenge when China Open kicks off tomorrow. At Indonesia Open in July Chan and Goh won against the Chinese top pair in straight games but as mentioned they lost in three games two days ago. The Malaysians are ranked 8 in the world now so they will soon enter the tournaments as a seeded pair. This time however, they got the toughest draw possible; the world no. 1 in first round of China Open.

The legend is back again

China’s and the world’s second best, Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping who lost to Zheng and Huang in the Japan Open final yesterday, are seeded second. They were originally going to play against Danes Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Alexandra Bøje, but the Danes have withdrawn from China Open. Now the Chinese face Takuro Hoki and Koharu Yonemoto from Japan instead.

Indonesia’s legendary Liliyana Natsir and partner Tontowi Ahmad weren’t playing Japan Open but they are back on court this week. Ahmad and Natsir are seeded 3 and have a Japanese pair in first round in Yuki Kaneko and Misaki Matsutomo. The winner of this match will face another Indonesian or Japanese pair in second round.

Hong Kong clash hit by another withdrawal

The 4th seeded Hongkongers Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet also got other opponents than what the original draw shows. They had first drawn compatriots Lee Chun Hei Reginald and Chau Hoi Wah but the two have withdrawn. Now Tang and Tse are facing Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova from Russia instead in what will be the first encounter between the two pairs.
