Impossible mission for Americans
Emily Kan and Isabel Zhong from USA had to deliver nothing less than a sensation if they should make it into second round of China Open. They faced China’s best women’s double, Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan (3), who had no problems advancing to second round. The American duo is number 138 in the world – the Chinese number 2.
Chen and Jia only needed 22 minutes to win the match where there was never any doubt about the outcome. With 21-11 21-13 they secured a battle against compatriots Tang Jinhua and Yu Xiaohan in second round tomorrow.
World Junior Champion eliminates Chinese
For one Chinese player it was a sad exit today. Chen Xiaoxin, number 33 on the world ranking, was up against the World Junior Champion from 2017, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung from Indonesia. Tunjung is ranked 23 in the world and it was the first ever encounter between the two.
Chen Xiaoxin had no problems in taking first game 21-12 but in second things were getting more serious. Tunjung won a close game 21-19 and forced the match into a decisive third game. Here they two girls continued a very close battle, which could go which way it would.
No less than four match points were needed though before we had a winner. With 23-21 in third game Gregoria Mariska Tunjung advances to second round and the Chinese has to accept just getting one match on home soil this week. In next match Tunjung is playing the winner of Ratchanok Intanon (4) and Beiwen Zhang who are playing later today.
