The draws for the individual events at the Asian Games in Jakarta were made before the team event finals and gave some interesting results. In mixed double we may see a rematch of the Olympic final from 2016 already in the quarterfinal. The individual competition begins Thursday 23 August at 12 PM local time.
Men’s single preview
With 33 entries in men’s singles there is only one match in first round – Pang Fong Pui, Macau, against Batdavaa Munkhbat, Mongolia – all other players have a bye into second round. And some of the seeded players have some fairly manageable first matches while others are up against tough opponents from first point.
Top seeded Shi Yuqi, China, faces Jonatan Christie, Indonesia, who he has had problems with several times before. The two have won three times each in their previous six encounters. Second seeded Kento Momota, Japan, is most likely to play Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Indonesia, in the third round if they both overcome players from Nepal and Iran respectively. Momota and Ginting played a hard match of 84 minutes in the semifinal of the team event.
Son Wan Ho, Korea, who is back from injuries is seeded 3 and has drawn a Nepalese opponent in first match. If he delivers as expected he is most likely to play Lee Zii Jia from Malaysia in second match. Finally the 4th seeded Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei who got a good win over Shi Yuqi in the men’s team event semifinal is looking at an interesting clash with H. S. Prannoy, India, if they both overcome their opponents in the first match.
